Gamcheon Village, often called the "Machu Picchu of Korea" due to its stunning landscape, is also steeped in the painful history of Busan. During the Korean War, refugees settled in this mountainous area and transformed it into a livable community. In 2009, the village underwent a transformation when students, artists, and local residents collaborated on the Village Art Project, which helped turn Gamcheon into one of Busan’s top tourist destinations.
Now a prominent cultural landmark in western Busan, the Gamcheon Culture Village offers visitors an immersive, experience-based visit. Begin your tour at the village information center, where you can purchase a stamp map to guide you through the alleyways. The first stop is the small museum at the village entrance, where you can learn about Gamcheon’s history before exploring further.
As you wander through the village, you'll be captivated by vibrant murals and artwork that breathe life into the narrow alleys. Along the way, souvenir shops and workshops offer a chance to participate in hands-on activities, where you can create your own keepsakes. One of the most popular experiences for visitors is the hanbok rental program. For a modest fee, you can choose from traditional hanbok, modernized versions, or even outfits from Korea’s enlightenment era.
A key highlight of the village is the photo zone featuring sculptures of the Little Prince and the Desert Fox gazing over the colorful houses. Although there's often a queue, donning a hanbok and taking a memorable picture here is worth the wait. Another excellent spot for photos, especially with the village as a backdrop, is near the lighthouse.
Gamcheon Culture Village is not just a place to visit but a vibrant, interactive experience that offers a blend of history, art, and local culture, making it a must-see for anyone visiting Busan.
